Always in need of maintenance, the all important ground crew are constantly on standby, as seen here refuelling and arming the Lancaster ready for another dangerous mission at night. The Americans took over the responsibility of daylight attacks, as losses of the relatively poorly self defended Lancaster were high. Ground crew had to work in all sorts of weather conditions, as depicted. It has to be remembered of course, that many ground crew lost their lives as a result of enemy attacks, and as far as the success of the mission, were just as important as the aircrew.
