Paston Mill, Norfolk

Not a very often painted mill, I was struck by the potential for a simple but dramatic scene here. The sky was of my own invention but I wanted to inject something into the painting to attract a little attention. My intention was to heavily contrast the mill cowl against a dark sky. I am always amazed when the sun highlights a scene against a dark sky and it was too tempting on this occasion. The dark sky lent itself conveniently to having the remnants of a rainbow in it. One can always add interest to a painting even if it has little narrative value such as the heavy clumps of weedy scrub in the foreground. I really believe a good foreground is of paramount importance to the composition, weather it be a clump of weeds or an innocuous puddle of water.
