The inspiration for this painting came from a desire to catch the smell and noise of an engine with its train behind it. I could hear the rattle and echoy screeches as it passed through the brick lined cutting pulling out of Euston station London. The rendition of smoke and steam fascinates me especially when it comes to painting it. I tried to catch the effect of the sun shinning through the smoke casting the lovely shadow rays in the background. The only critisism to date I have had from a very keen steam personage was the fact that the bricks in the wall should be a shade or two darker! I thought if that's the only thing he can pick out in the whole image I must be doing something right.
