I fully believe that some of the best compositions are those of simplicity with simple atmosphere and mood. This was the basis of my painting 'The Last Light'. I adore atmosphere in real life and in paintings and one of my first aims when I picked up a brush was to catch this very element. Colour is of paramount importance if atmosphere is to be caught to its best advantage. Probably more important than colour believe it or not, is tonal values. As light strength fades, colour becomes less important ( basically because you simply can't see so much of it ) but the relationship between tonal values becomes more important. The winding ribbon of water cuts conveniently into the very dark land allowing a measure of light to be injected into the dark lower area below the horizon line.
