Spitfires of 616 (South Yorkshire) Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force waits for the sun to clear the mist from RAF Kenley on the 19th August 1940. This Squadron remained on the front line for some of the most intense fighting of the Battle of Britain.

Pilot Officer Walker was posted directly to 616 Squadron on the 18th June 1940. In combat over Dover on August 26th Walker was shot down and bailed out wounded in the foot, he was rescued by the Royal Navy and admitted to Ramsgate hospital, going the next day to RAF Hospital Horton. He rejoined the Squadron at RAF Tangmere on May 1st 1941.

The original canvas measured 20" x 14" and is signed on the back by Flight Lieutenant William Walker AE.
