Who would have believed that this painting was never going to be a cricket scene at all. The canvas was actually going to be an aviation painting depicting a First World War aircraft having landed in a field with farm buildings and general farm paraphernalia, the pilot would be mulling over a map with a local farmer trying to figure out where he is. But no..... I had to change my mind half way through didn't I. As the painting progressed, and the background trees went in, I could hear a cricket match on the TV, the sound of leather on willow conjured up visual images and the transformation had already taken place in my mind, I was in the middle of a cricket scene! The challenge was to conform to an old art rule, "no matter how many people there are in a composition, get everybody doing something". I have to admit, one of the best ways of doing this is to look at plenty of photos of cricket scenes.
